A Vision for a Green Punjab
The Climate Internship Program, spearheaded by CM Maryam Nawaz, focuses on strengthening the province’s environmental workforce. With a specific focus on youth empowerment, the initiative seeks to instill responsibility for the environment, engage graduates in real-world climate challenges, and provide a pathway toward long-term employment.
In addition to the internship program, CM Punjab announced the establishment of a dedicated smog hotline, “1373,” designed to combat the growing smog problem. Further, a directive was issued to allocate 1% of the budget for developmental projects toward tree-planting campaigns across the province.
2000 Internships for Graduates in Environmental Fields
This ambitious initiative will offer 2,000 internships to graduates with a background in environmental sciences and related fields. Participants will work on practical solutions for addressing environmental degradation, with a particular focus on combating smog and improving air quality in Punjab. The program aims to provide a solid foundation for future environmental leaders by offering real-life experience in tackling climate challenges.
Stipend Increase: From Rs 25,000 to Rs 60,000
One of the most significant announcements was the increase in the monthly stipend for interns. The government has raised the stipend from Rs 25,000 to Rs 60,000, ensuring that participants are financially supported during their internships. This increase will also provide interns with better opportunities to build their careers while contributing to a cleaner, greener Punjab.
CM Maryam Nawaz emphasized that internships are more than just temporary opportunities; they are critical for building sustainable job opportunities in the future. She highlighted that environmental internships are not only about work experience but also about taking responsibility for the environment and creating a positive impact for future generations.
Cross-Border Collaboration with Indian Punjab
Recognizing the need for a united effort in combating environmental issues, CM Punjab called for cooperation between Pakistan’s Punjab and Indian Punjab to jointly address the smog crisis. She pointed out that the smog problem cannot be solved by a single entity and urged educational institutions to incorporate pollution awareness programs into their curricula. This initiative aims to promote greater understanding of air quality issues, particularly from October 15 to November 15, the peak smog season.
